The February Artist Selection: 3 Artists We Love

LYNN KATE

Lynn Kate is a zero waste artist currently based in Amsterdam. After traveling through Asia and India, she was appalled by the conditions of people working in small sweatshops for barely any pay, and the immense pollution caused by the fast fashion industry. It left her feeling shocked, sad and powerless, but she wanted to make a difference. Back home in the Netherlands, she began her journey of creating fashion from recycled materials. After lots of hard work experimenting and researching, she started my own clothing brand where every piece is made from textile scraps and is dyed with natural ingredients and was a part of Amsterdam Fashion Week, where she had the opportunity to make a dress for Marianne Thieme, leader of one of the most green political parties in the Netherlands.

“This year I want to start four projects. I will start making a series of fine of art pieces and when these are finished I will use those works as inspiration for creating yards of fabric. After that I want to use those yards of fabric to make an haute couture collection. Because the haute couture is too delicate to wear, I will make a commercial capsule collection. All pieces of art, fabric and clothing will be made from leftover and dismissed pieces of fabric. My vision for the end of the year is to bring my different work together on a photo or film set, together with self-made zero waste props, to create still and moving images. My personal goal is to connect with other people who resonate with my work. I strongly believe our purpose on this planet is to create and inspire, so I want to bring people together to share ideas and learn from each other.”

ELINE MARTHERUS

Eline Martherus is a contemporary artist based in Amsterdam. Primarily working with acrylics and obtaining a diploma in fine Arts, the artist's work has been shown in Amsterdam, London and Bali. Her intuitive way of working is conceptual driven and follows an organic process with hand embroidered materials, geometrical shapes and construction techniques.

“In times where I loose this feeling i try to shift energy and instead of creating I will do other parts of the business. Mantra for myself is that what I have now was once upon the things I only wished for. I try to keep my practice pure and close to myself. Next is being more conscious of my footprint, building on my closed loop as an artist. Channeling my work to those I wish too, finding like minded people which share my mindset and share the same message. Among the hectic pace which people live by nowadays, many people feel the need for a peace of mind and purpose. Using the Flower of Life as a base, I try to give people the point of centralization, or meaning, they are looking for. I would be honored to have collaboration with awareness schools, to speak and express and feature paintings there. Other than that my focus isn't on exhibitions but mostly on working sharing and receiving.”

JOHANNE BROUILLETTE

Johanne Brouillette is a French Canadian abstract artist who has been painting for over a quarter of a century. After 20 years of figurative oil painting, she decided to attend a one day abstract workshop in 2016 and has never looked back. She almost immediately began exhibiting her art and has since been included in over 60 regional, national and international juried exhibitions. Johanne has been awarded several prizes for her art and is currently represented by galleries in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. Her paintings are in both private and corporate collections worldwide.

“Despite a lot of the physical art shows being cancelled in 2020, it was an incredible year for me as an artist. I am pleased to say that 2021 appears to be even more promising. I was recently appointed an international ambassador for a large art gallery in Canada and I am honored to have been given the opportunity to start helping other artists on their artistic journey. I am also looking forward to continuing to exhibit my large scale abstracts internationally and already have my first invitational exhibition at the end of January in the U.S. I look forward to continuing my exploration of mixed media techniques in both my monochrome and more colorful bodies of work. I feel blessed to have gallery requests, commission requests and am actually having trouble keeping up. I am excited about what lies ahead for me as an artist. To me, creating is a daily necessity. It keeps me grounded and helps me process my emotions.”
